In cooperation with the EU, House’s electronic voting system launched

Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament, Atef Tarawneh, on Thursday launched the conferences and electronic voting system (EVS) at the House's headquarters, which was implemented in cooperation with the European Union under the program "Enhanced Support to Democratic Governance in Jordan".

The program aims to support Jordan's reform process, to promote democracy, to foster inclusive decision-making processes, the role of women and youth, and to consolidate democratic political culture.

During the inaugural ceremony, Tarawneh said the EVS reflects a real partnership with the EU, adding the project's first stage had " great" impact on the Parliament's work in facilitating voting, which promoted parliamentary transparency.

The House has taken many steps to strengthen the Parliament's bid to promote openness, transparency, and to enhance social participation, Tarawneh pointed out.

Tarawneh appreciated the EU's role and its partnership with the House, adding the EU had a great impact on the development of the Parliament's several action mechanisms.

On the Palestinian cause, he lauded the EU's position calling for the two-state solution as a guarantee for the region's "secure future and its generations."

For his part, Andrea Fontana, the EU's Ambassador to Jordan, who attended the ceremony, said the EVS project is in line with His Majesty King Abdullah II's vision for strengthening the democratic parliamentary role, adding the Parliament should start the process of moving towards a comprehensive strategy to achieve the desired change, a goal deemed a major part of the e-parliament's work.

This bid, he affirmed, will improve efficiency of the parliamentary processes and the Parliament's practices with all transparency and efficiency.

On the EU's aid, he stressed the EU's commitment to provide continuous support to the House, noting the EVS project enhances the ability and efficiency of the House's performance in exercising its legislative and supervisory role in a professional manner.

Fontana noted the EVS project will also strengthen the openness and transparency the House is trying to reach with all public institutions, civil society and citizens.
