FM, German minister discuss ties, regional crises

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi received on Monday German Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Niels Annen for a discussion of bilateral relations and regional issues, particularly the Palestinian cause and the Syrian crisis.

Safadi and Annen said Jordan and German are continuing work to cement cooperation, and discussed steps to build on the outcome of His Majesty King Abdullah's summit with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to increase cooperation in economic, investment and defence fields.

On the Palestinian issue, Safadi warned against the danger of the continuation of the stalemate in the peace process, particularly in light of the unilateral Israeli measures that undermine the chances of achieving peace in line with the two-state solution, which is the only avenue to bring about comprehensive peace.

Safadi said he appreciated Germany's support of the two-state solution and its aid to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to address its financial crisis and underline its key role.

The meeting also dealt with the developments in the Syrian crisis and the need to reinvigorate efforts to find a political solution to it and address the crises it had produced, particularly the issue of refugees. Safadi said the refugees' issue is an international responsibility that should be translated into ongoing programs to assist the refugees and share the burden with the host countries.
